How to Make Better Decisions

Mandy Evans is in town training my Miracles Coaches in her special coaching mojo, which has worked for me for decades.

Last night we had dinner. I was telling her about some hard decisions I had to make, one about my project to end homelessness and the other about a home we were considering buying, and I was inviting her feedback.

She explained that a client of hers only does “yes’s”.

That means that when he is faced with a decision, he asks himself, “Is it a yes, no, or maybe?”

In other words, does he get an instant inner feeling that no he should not do it, or maybe he should, or, yes it’s a doer?

He doesn’t do any no’s or maybe’s.

I love this simple method for cutting through all the decision making and worrying.

As I looked at each of my decisions, I asked myself “Is it a yes, no, or maybe?”

It was instantly liberating.

In the case of the house, I got a no.

I wanted it to be a yes, but the house wasn’t exactly right, despite great views and location and more.

I’m still open to a new house, of course, just not that particular one.

In the other case I was thinking about the city I am invited to launch Operation YES in.

My first response when thinking about it was a queasy one.

I felt dread.

When I asked if it was a yes, no, or maybe, I got a clear no.

That made me feel lighter.

But then I realized if I adjusted a few things, and got more support, I could then go into the tentative city to launch Operation YES, and my answer would now be a yes.

As you can see, asking if a choice is a yes, no, or maybe gives you instant clarity.

From there, you can reshape your decision, or your request, or just let it go.

For Mandy, and for me, life is about following your inner guidance system.

Your inner guidance system is (in my words) the Divine leading your way.

It shows up in your life as that “yes” feeling you get when you are considering a choice.

Follow that and all is well in the most beautiful, magical, even miraculous way.

Joe

    Hi Joe —

Excellent!! When I saw the title of this post, I wondered what you would have to say….

I started doing the same thing about 4 months ago. And the results have been powerful!

As a follow-on, I would also recommend experimenting with saying Yes (at least on the inside) to everything that comes up. The things you are really in alignment with will stick around. Everything else will fade away. It’s a bigger way of moving into alignment with the Divine Intelligence since you are no longer offering resistance. I know the thought of doing so may be overwhelming but I recommend trying it out and seeing what happens.

    With much love and appreciation,
    Frank

What a great insight. A YES felt and spoken with full conviction has such a huge power on our story. It is amazing what happens!

Warnings and advices can turn a strong and convincing YES into a weak little yes, which often dump into a NO. I have just posted a true story on my blog. (http://www.successfulwebwomen.com/blog/)

Thank you so much for this insight!

    Thanks Joe,

Once again, you have shared a simplified process that has worked in your life. I appreciate that you are so open with the ideas that worked with your friends and now work for you and next shall work for me.

    Joe,

What a nice approach. I will use this with my decisions and pass it on to my patients.

    Cool!

I wonder though – if you ask yourself: yes, no or maybe…and you get a no (with a feeling of dread)..is it only because of the sheer amount of hard work you know it’s going to take, or is it a definite no because something isn’t right?

    Hi Joe,
I’ve submitted my comment twice, and do not see it posted yet. Is it being considered? Or is there some reason it has been rejected? The comment included a link to my blog, and the article about free will and the power to choose (ie. it’s another way to make better decisions that I wanted to share).

Hi Jennifer. If you look at a project and get a no because of the work involved, then something isn’t right. It can be as simple as your attitude toward the work. When someone gets a yes to run a marathon, they know there will be intense work, but their attitude accepts it as “par for the course”. I think a no because of dreading work means there’s something about the work you aren’t in alignment with. I writer a lot of books, which some consider “work,” and may dread it, but I love it and do it gleefully. Hope this helps.

I LOVE this, Joe! Making a note to include a link here for my next newsletter.

Here’s another decision-making system that really resonates (and works!) for me. I learned it from Stephanie Frank in her book THE ACCIDENTAL MILLIONAIRE…

    1. Figure out what your top 3 values are. (No need to get complicated about it; just sit down with a big notepad – one of my favorite things! – and a pen, make a list, get quiet, listen, prioritize.)

    2. When it’s decision-making time, simply ask, “Is this in alignment with at least one of my top 3 values?”

I find it helps me get really clear, really fast.

I like this “yes-no-maybe” system as well, because it helps nip “settling” in the bud. As in, almost good enough isn’t good enough. Which is as it should be when when the decisions affect our hearts and souls.

    Hi Joe:

I’ve been saying “Yes I Can” since I was a little girl, all because my mom told me I could do anything I wanted if I put my mind to it. I finally wrote my free e-book, Make Your Dreams A Reality – The Power of Believing based on that mantra. And yes in my list of resources I’ve listed 3 of your products – The Key, The Clearing Audio and The Attractor Factor. Yes is a very uplifting word. Yes I Can is a very powerful mantra! 😀
