How to Drive Rich Money Right Into Your Hands

While traveling a few days ago I spotted the magazine Exotic Car Buyers Guide 2007, published by Dupont Registry.

Since Francine wasn’t looking, I bought it.

My Panoz was listed, of course. The write-up for it said the Panoz race car beat Porsches, Ferraris, and Spykers in the endurance races called Le Mans 24-hour and the Sebring 12-hour.

Francine would be so proud.

I thumbed through the magazine and found some exciting looking cars.

There’s the Pagani Zonda F Roadster. And the Saleen S7 Twin Turbo. Both look more like street rockets than street hot rods.

But the car that really brought out the James Bond in me was the Gibbs Aquada, which is a car you can jet ski with. The wheels go up when you hit water and come down when you hit the pavement. Sir Richard Branson drove one in 2004 across the English Channel. And broke a speed record with it.

When we move to Maui, I might want a Gibbs Aquada.

I’m a little surprised the new Saturn Sky isn’t listed in the magazine, nor the all-electric Tesla Roadster. But all things considered, they may have been left in the dugout because they don’t cost enough.

In all the cars I admired in the issue, they were all well over $100,000 and some went for a million dollars – or more.

You have to wonder, who buys these cars?

Well, the rich do.

And sometimes the wannabe rich do.

But the marketing lesson here is that we live in an abundant country and in an abundant time and an abundance of people are spending a staggering amount of money to have something no one else has, or to experience something few others do.

You can cater to these people and they will make you very, very wealthy.

You simply have to start thinking bigger.

Or start charging more.

PPPS – Before my recent talk at AWAI in Florida, a fellow came up to me, said he read this blog all the time, and wanted a copy of my book on P.T. Barnum, There’s A Customer Born Every Minute. He said he wanted to read it on his honeymoon. I didn’t have the heart to ask what his bride was going to read.
