We went to see the new Sylvester Stallone movie called ROCKY BALBOA the other day.
If you’re a Rocky fan, or a Stallone fan, you should go see it. It’s the sixth flick in the likable character’s journey through life, and probably the last. (Rocky is in his 50’s in the movie and Stallone is 60.) It’s well worth seeing.
Here’s why:
The other day I posted about how I increased my hand strength by leaving a pair of gorilla hand grippers out and squeezing them — or trying to — every day.
Well, with the same principle in mind, I now have a rope climbing tower.
It’s a metal tower with an extension at the top of it, with a heavy rope hanging from it to the ground. It looks a lot like a gallows pole.
It’s outside by my gym; near the pool, spa and catarium.
It doesn’t quite go into the clouds, but it’s 15 feet high and pretty intimidating when you’re at the base of it looking straight up.
I haven’t tried climbing it yet as the metal tower was just set in concrete and has to dry first. But I’m pretty sure I won’t get up the rope on the first try unless a rabid bear is chasing me.
And maybe not even then.
But if I try it every day, in time I will do it.
The new Rocky movie has a similar message.
It’s not about stopping.
It’s about continuing.

I bet if you use your legs you’ll be up the rope sooner than you think.
Hold on with your arms and then move the rope around to the outside of your feet and then between your legs from behind. Hook it over your foot and then step on it with your other foot. You should be able to rest your entire weight on it doing it that way. Inch worm your way up by holding yourself with your arms and then pulling your legs up as close to your chest as possible with the rope wrapped around. Lock it down with your foot then stand up for each rep.
Be sure to save enough for the trip down. Don’t wear shorts and if you want to repel down, wear gloves and thick pants.
If you want a visual, rent “Sidekick” with Chuck Norris. He shows the kid how to do it there.
The next level of difficulty is the same technique but using your arms instead of your legs to pull yourself up between locking the rope out.
Next you use two arms and no legs. Finally you do it Rambo style with each arm pulling up your weight alternately.
If you want to make any of these steps incrementally harder, strap a little weight around your waist.
Some people put a bell at the top to ring for motivation.
