Now that Zero Limits the book is an official Top 100 bestseller on www.amazon.com and the audio version is an official bestseller on www.itunes.com in the Audio Books section, the reviews are flying in.

Some of them are hilarious, like the person who didn’t even read the book but flipped through it for 15 minutes in a book store and then “reviewed” it, saying it was all hype.

Or another “reviewer” who said Dr. Hew Len doesn’t exisit, that I created him as a literary device. (!)

Most people declare the book to be a life transforming read.

But others say it’s just packed with sales pitches for more stuff.

The latter confuses me.

I looked through the book and didn’t see any sales pitches at all. There certainly are links for more information, much like in these blog posts, but not sales copy to go buy anything.

In a later chapter in Zero Limits I describe some products I created because I had been cleaning, clearing and giving. My zeroing out limits within me opened me to receive money-making ideas.

Those were examples of how wealth can be generated. After all, the subtitle of the book includes wealth as a topic.

I suppose some people interpreted those well intended examples as pitches.

I was with friends over the weekend and I told them all of the above. They pointed out how people are sensitive to my success, that it makes them more aware of their not trying or not succeeding. It’s easier to blame me than to take responsibility for themselves.

Someone remembered the famous quote by German physics professor Georg Christoph Lichtenberg,

“A book is a mirror: If an ass peers into it, you can’t expect an apostle to look out.”

We began to have fun imagining people sitting around their homes and bad mouthing me when they saw “yet another” email from my hand, saying things like, “There goes that hypster Joe Vitale selling something else AGAIN!” or “He just wants another Panoz car!”

We had a good laugh and let it go.

But as the weekend evolved, and we were looking for some things online, we saw opportunity to imagine how skeptical minds would react to what we were doing.

For example…

I wanted to find out what the famous song writer and singer Jackson Browne was up to, so we googled his name.

We found his site, saw he wasn’t touring, but saw his online store. You can buy shirts, Cd’s, song books, etc.

So naturally we pretended to be one of my critics and we declared, “Look at that Jackson Browne! Selling more things– even SHIRTS!”

That conversation led to us looking for a Winslow, Arizona site, since Jackson wrote a famous song called “Take It Easy” (which the Eagles made famous), mentioning that city in it.

Sure enough there’s a site the town has up for the famous line in the song “standin on the corner”. And when you browse it, you see they are selling stuff, such as bricks that you can have your name engraved on and then placed on the corner in Winslow, Arizona.

We could imagine people throwing up their arms in disgust and screaming, “Oh my God! The city is selling BRICKS!”

And later Nerissa said she had some old records that Thomas Edison put on the market long ago. Everyone thought they might be valuable. But there were so many records issued during that time period that the things are barely worth a dollar each today.

That led to us jokingly declaring, “Edison was a WHORE!”

We could do this all night, of course.

Many people do it all their lives.

They critique rather than create.

I wrote a blog post a while back about the difference between selling and serving. It goes like this:

If you want the information someone tells you about, you’ll say the person offering it is serving you.

If you don’t want the information being offered to you, you’ll say the person offering it is selling.

Well, is it serving or selling?

It depends on their motivation and your interpretation.

I’m doing my best to serve people.

But what you decide is entirely up to you.

Joe

I’ve listened to the audiobook, and I’m also waiting for the book to arrive. Getting this ho’oponopono information out is really a breakthrough, this is really a revolutionary book…

    Thanks!

And, just because you mention it in this post, something I find a little bothering about the book (or at least the audiobook – I’m not sure about the book), are all those internet links in the middle of it, especially at the begininnig. This is something you almost never find in a book, and this is not my case, but somebody who doesn’t know you may think you’re just out to sell something…

Placing all the “selling” links at the end of the book would make the book more classical, and also wouldn’t push away some of the most uptight or cultured people, who are just waiting for an excuse to point the finger and attack.

Anyway, this is just what I see in the mirror…

    Namaste

    Hi Joe,

I am about half way through your new book and find it intriguing.

I use your success as a guide for what can be achieved and I love going to Amazon to see how high up your books can get.

However, my general impression is that you do indeed like to talk a lot about your success and the things you acquire. Only you can answer “why” you do this. People have their own perceptions as to why and many of those perceptions may not agree with yours. How does that make you feel? Why does it make you feel this way? Who is responsible for you feeling this way – is it them or you?

As for my perceptions, I sometimes get tired of hearing about all your successes. However, this isn’t because I think you’re bragging, I believe you’re trying to help people “believe” and show them that they can be successful too!!! For people who are familiar with your other works, including your blog writings, sometimes hearing about your successes gets redundant and we just want you to get to the stuff we don’t already know!

Btw, I did “not” get the impression that you’re trying to sell more stuff in your new book. I honestly get the feeling you’re really trying to help!

    Peace and love, Jim

I have to agree with Zero above after also listening to the audiobook. There seemed to be a long list of testimonials in the middle section which moves away from the main focus. It may be different when you read the book, but as an audiobook I found it distracting, and admit to fast forwarding through a lot of it. It did sound like testimonials trying to sell me something, when I was more interested in hearing more of what was being said by the authors.

Also it was disappointing that here we find only one aspect of Ho’oponopono and we are told that the rest are secrets, and can not be discussed because of confidentiality agreements. Hence we are directed to going to a seminar.

When the movie “The Secret” came out there was a lot of criticism that it was only one secret being divulged, and the same appears to be found in this book. Perhaps this is what has caused some people to say “it’s just packed with sales pitches for more stuff.”

I believe that if you are really into self-improvement you will ultimately look to going to seminars even after reading a detailed book. The same way it is not uncommon to read a book multiple times. There is something new to be learnt with every reading.

I am looking forward to looking at the book and continue to listen to the audiobook multiple times.

    Hi Joe,

To those who don’t know Dr. Vitale personally, I can only say, “Work on it. Take time to get to know him.”

Joe Vitale is NOT a “self serving” person, but one who gives from the heart. It might be a small price to pay for his book, but take his instruction to heart. For the price of the book, you’re going to get a gold mine.

Joe, I’m hoping to see you on the 28th at your book signing. I’m doing a press release on it here in our local paper. I wish you could do a book signing at our local library. You have a lot of fans here.

I’ve learned a lot from Joe Vitale. He’s taught me to THINK BIG and strive to do great things. We are not placed here on earth to lead mediocre lives, but rather to leave our “mark”. Destiny is something we create, and not something handed to us by a whimsical notion.

Joe Vitale will long be remembered by the mark he has left in this world with his writings, and I’m sure he will be quoted for many years to come.

Keep up the good work, and I hope to see you soon for lunch. I’ll put in a call to your office to arrange some time with you.

I remain always grateful for who you are and what you have done.

    Semper,

    Joe,
Your publicist was kind enough to send Connie a copy of Zero Limits for review, and her review will be presented in 2 parts on her Whirled Musings blog at http://cosmicconnie.blogspot.com/.

Having known you for years, I am aware of your commitment to the unimpeded flow of information. Knowing this, I thought you deserved to know that some reviews of your book have been removed from Amazon. Either there is a glitch in Amazon’s system, or somebody is playing games. I know you’d want to see this corrected. If you’re interested, I have copies of the missing reviews, and would be glad to provide them to you.

One point: Jackson Browne (as well as the others you mentioned) is selling products, not holding forth the promise of enlightenment. No small distinction, in my opinion.

  6. July 9, 2007 at 1:13 pm

Hi Ron. I haven’t seen or heard from you in at least five years, so it’s nice to see your name appear again. I don’t interfere with the reviews at Amazon and don’t want to start now. I’m not sure how their system works but there’s bound to be a way to contact them and find out what they are doing. As for Zero Limits promising enlightenment, it doesn’t do that at all. It does shake up the brain, though.

    Joe-
“A book is a mirror: If an ass peers into it, you can’t expect an apostle to look out.”

For all those seeing the “sales messages” in your works – perhaps they need to look into that mirror and open the door to buying a product that perhaps can change their lives…

All because, I bought a product from you last August, and my mind became open to much bigger ideas.

I personally, don’t tire of reading or hearing about your successes (or anyone else’s for that matter) – I’m inspired by biographies and stories of success – wherever they come from – those stories become my stories, first by listening, then by thinking, then by doing…

    Congratulations on the new book!

I would say “don’t let it bother you… but I know you don’t! lol!
You also GIVE so much information away in your various offers. I have bought your books and also taken you up on some of these very valuable offers! I always feel it was money (and time) well spent!

Perhaps you are SO good at marketing you are persuading these folks to buy against their will? 😉 That alone is inspiring!

I also admire that you are open in the business world about your metaphysical values and share those ideas! (being right brained in a left brained world!) You give me courage to do the same! See http://attractwealthnow.wordpress.com

If this really works then it would be great to see more documented studies on this.

    Great blog Joe!

I’ve followed your career for years not only as a promoter of your products – also a friend. You are as far from a self-serving person as I’ve ever met. You do great things and deserve all your success. Your work with Kirk is just one stellar example.

Let people talk all they want. After all, most people are talkers – not doers like you are. You’re an inspiration to all of us! Keep those new products coming – they’re priceless!

    Hi Joe.
You have certainly been an influencial mentor for me over the years. Spiritual Marketing was the first book of yours I read. I have read several other of your books and have heard you speak on numerous webcasts. You are true to yourself. You are uinique. You are a positive force in the world. And of course, you were the first person to tell me about The Secret. For that I thank you.

Jackson Browne is someone who I have followed since his very first album. I have seen him perfom a number of times and always enjoy his shows.
As a matter of fact, the last time I saw him, was here in Hawaii, for a benefit concert in ’91 or ’92 for Hurricane Iniki Victims. Also on the bill were Crosby, Stills and Nash, Bonnie Raitt and even Jimmy Buffet showed up. That was a great concert for a worthy cause. So for Jackson, its not about the money. He has done many, many benefits over the years. Thanks for putting me in touch, again, with Jackson Browne.
Keep up the good work. Be well, stay well.

    Joe,

I just finished the audio book, I got it through the Audible site. You are right, it was easier to find there. Very cool format they deliver in! Fun to use!

Thank you so much for creating the audio book! It was my strong desire to have one, I always can listen, while I work out, etc., but don’t always find the dedicated time to sitting down and reading a BOOK. Needless to say, I was over the moon when I saw the audio books and ran off to get one!

Now.. to “Zero Limits”… I have been waiting my WHOLE life to have this book become manifest! So thank you!

Now… soon you will see, if you haven’t already .. ‘I Love You’ is still a memory replaying, a stepping stone. For there is no “You” and there is no “I”. There is only LOVE. And not the concept of Love, nor the memory or Love, or the thought of Love, or the feeling of Love. Just PURE LOVE.

And there is truly no one out there… JUST LOVE.

    🙂

    All Love,

“More persons, on the whole, are humbugged by believing in nothing, than by believing too much” – P.T. Barnum

Overcoming societal conditioning towards the negative isn’t easy. Some people have been conditioned to not be happy unless they are unhappy. Skepticism and ridicule is often a guise a person uses to keep themselves in the comfort zone of the ordinary familiar world while appearing to be smarter and not naive like the rest of the “fools”.

I for one appreciate having links tied in to the writing at the point of discussion so that I can go look it up immediately if I wish. Sometimes, I can take a break from the book to go look at the information I was referred to in the book. This style of writing is much like what you get when you read articles on a website, ezine, or blog. If the link is included directly where the information about is, then for me it’s easier to reference than if it’s stuck off in the back of the book.

Links stuck in the back of the book are less likely to be seen, and I think it’s nice that Joe provides them on the spot. That to me is customer service of the information age. Joe gives writes what he writes about and gives the reader immediate direction on where to go for more info; if they’re interested.

So what’s the big deal? If you don’t want to visit the link, ignore it!

Mr. Vitale. I am an ardent reader of your work. Your works have inspired me immensely in the past. I honestly think that I have read every single one of your publications–I’ve even seen a few of your video-taped seminars! In all honesty, “Zero Limits” slipped through the cracks for me and I was surprised to see it at my local bookstore. I was giddy to see that it was a book where you’d expand on the hooponopono process!
I just finished the book last night and rushed to check your blog to see if there were any extra tidbits; I was simply not satisfied with the various methods you presented to help “clean” my memory-based programs. So I read your blog and found that you were less than thrilled about the Amazon reviews saying the book was one big “salespitch.” Being a big fan, I must admit that I am somewhat tainted to comment on this: your ebooks do indeed include lots of links to products you endorse (and I am used to this). But I can see how the “average” reader might see the external “links” as product springboards. Like I said, I’m probably not qualified to comment, but I have to tell you about an experience I had as I neared the end of the book.
It was towards the latter half of “Zero Limits.” You mentioned several times to clean, clean clean, highlighting the importance of, well…CLEANING. I was SOLD. Give me my toothbrush and some Mr. Clean! Keep thanking divinity? Check. Was I sold on this method? No. Blue solar water? Check! Was I sold on it? No. Keep saying “I love you”? Check! Did I feel it alone could work? No.
Who do I clean to? Where do I submit these fine chocolates of thanks and love and apologies? Divinity? That was mentioned. A person pissing you off? That was also mentioned. A chair in the room? That was a possibility for gurus. Everything and everyone? Not sure that was mentioned. Or do we provide a prayer to divinity so that we can heal whatever obstacle we tossed onto their path? Or do these methods work for some and not for others? Which cleaning method is right for me? And who do I address it to?
I kept waiting and waiting and waiting to read more tips on better processes of cleaning; surely, for something so soul-shattering, Vitale would include the equivalent Mr. Clean, right? Wrong. Just when I thought you had supplied me with everything I’d need to make progress towards discovering a stronger path towards my own divinity, you hit the brakes; you couldn’t expand on additional hooponopono cleaning techniques due to signing a non-disclosure agreement. Yes, you included various testimonies, but I got the sense that these people were nowhere near the caliber of those who were privy to Dr. Len’s workshops.
    I was devastated.
To hear you say that true progress required readers to actually attend a hooponopono workshop felt like a low blow. As a student filmmaker, I could barely scrape together enough cash to buy your books, what with renting student equipment and all. I loved practicing the magick of the Attractor Factor and incorporating Spiritual Marketing into my student works–but I’m thirsty to begin incorporating some serious spiritual progress into my creations. I love re-engineering stuff to my medium, but there was simply not enough to work with in terms of “Cleaning.” I understand the importance of taking 100% responsibility, but I needed more tangible stuff on the actual process. Like many “average readers”, I take something and run with it, make it my own. I don’t know if I’m making any sense, but I don’t have enough parts from your radio to build me a robot, you know?
It’s not all bad mojo, though. Probably the single most important thing I walked away with occurred immediately after you wrote about the bit where you realized you were an “inspirator.” You wrote that you had to continue to make works that would enlighten YOU (in turn enlightening your readers). Brilliant! I can WORK with this. “Cleaning” remains abstract to me–and too expensive to learn it *proper* apparently.
But “enlightening”? I can manage that. I can work towards opening my eyes a little bit more every moment. Through this understanding of mine, will I be cleaning as I try to enlighten myself? Somehow, I doubt it.
Is this my fault? Yes, 100%. Perhaps I should be grateful to divinity for allowing me to recognize that I couldn’t grasp the concept of cleaning as it was written. I just couldn’t *buy* into it, but I wanted to and still want to. Still, I should be grateful that divinity is probably pointing me towards something else, some other process.
I don’t feel I’m qualified to comment on how you should have done this or that with “Zero Limits.” I’m a kid compared to you, your work, your accomplishments, your evolutions. However, I do feel that your gratefulness to Dr. Len derailed you from providing the public what should have been a complete tome.
I do believe that the philosophy behind Zero-Limits is divine in its intention, but not in its outcome. Apologies and Love,
    -Omar

  19. July 10, 2007 at 5:56 pm

Omar, I believe the cleaning process I explained in the book is the best one to use. If its’s not for you, look elsewhere. I love you. I’m sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you.

So, “non disclosure agreements”???? I work with legal issues, sovereign jurisdiction etc. and such agreements are mandated by governments and big business to insure they continue to prosper without meaningful competition. Essentially guarding their profitable niche.
Not a good indication. And promoting an expensive seminar in a ‘teaser book’ can be justified as “clarifying the theme and if an individual has an interest then they can attend the “meaty” more productive seminar. FOR A PRICE.
And as most always is the case, the price is beyond the means of those who need the education the most.
    I am disappointed. NEV

Since I believe what you and Dr. Len say about “owning” whatever comes into your experience, then I guess I “own” your critics as well from reading your post. And guess what? I certainly do own them and take responsibility for them AND have been cleaning on them. I’ve commented on this before to one of your critics: I once criticized you for constantly “selling.” Then I realized it was my perception. I was envious. How embarrassing. But once I admitted it, I got rid of it. And now I truly do love hearing about all the wonderful things you are doing. It’s inspiring. Plus, I can choose whether or not to go to Amazon and buy your books or go to links you suggest. Fortunately for both of us, I generally do follow your advice and frequently go to Amazon to buy your books (or to your site) because I learn so much from what you share. And here’s just a sample of the good things you’ve helped me bring into my life: Mark Joyner’s Simpleology; after 30 years in marketing my writing and marketing skills have improved 100 fold with your Hypnotic Writing and Spiritual Marketing; I’m a member of your Hypnotic Gold group and now have a sign on my vision board that says, “Money loves speed” after listening to the latest interview in the series with Robert Ringer (whose newsletter I also get); and I wear my CEEPORT pin to clean, clean, clean after ordering and watching your DVD “The Missing Secret.” I was telling a friend the other day that I could play a variation on that old game of “Six Steps to Kevin Bacon” as my “Six Steps to Joe Vitale.” As proof I started connecting the threads for him and even amazed myself. Sorry to have rambled on but I am passionate about all the wonderful doors you’ve opened up for me. And I eagerly await the next one. Now I’m going to go clean on your critics!

    Joe:

I believe it was my post that you were referring to when you said, “Or another “reviewer” who said Dr. Hew Len doesn’t exisit, that I created him as a literary device. (!)”

If it was my review that you were referring to, I was not suggesting that you made Dr. Hew Len up. I know better — I have been following this man and his teachings for quite some time.

What I said was that you had written about something Dr. Hew Len said as though he said it directly to you. In fact, he said it to someone else in an interview in 1997, not to you. (This interview can be found on the Ho’oponopono website under the Articles tab.) As you can see, you transferred that passage word-for-word from Cat Saunders’ article, and suggested that he had said it directly to you during your visit with him to the hotel. It made me question whether your RELATIONSHIP with Dr. Hew Len was a literary device, not the man himself. If you misrepresented that, I just wondered what else you had misrepresented in the book.

I remember when I first read Jerry and Esther Hicks “Ask and it is Given” I knew that the universe had brought something into my life – that would change my life. And it did. Funny thing is – I get something different out of the book – each and every time I open the book. Zero Limits – feels like that. Pick it up and your going find something new – something different about it. People get – what they think they are going to get. Envy – of anything – can come up as anger – or frustration.(in reference to some of these previous comments) One thing I know for sure – this is a process. It’s taken me two years to get where I am today. If you want enlightenment – in my own opinion – it won’t come from just one book and it won’t come overnight. But it is a step in the journey – and if you can incorrporate that book into your journey – learn and succeed from it – I believe the Universe will respond with the next step towards enlightenment.

I had the opportunity to read your article about Ho’oponopono. I read it and was eager for more. I researched on my own and found the website http://www.hooponopono.org/ I realized at the time I wouldn’t be able to get to a class financially – and it hurt – like all things do when you want something for enlightenment – for healing – that you know in your heart will help – and can’t because of finances. So – I let go. I accepted within myself that I would someday learn more and attend the class. I had heard through the internet grapevine that you were on a mission to write a book about Ho’oponopono – so I knew it was only a matter of time.

The day your book came out – I thought for sure that Barnes and Noble or Borders would be carrying it. I traveled across the city from one end to the other to get to both stores. I was out of luck. I would have to order it. And I didn’t want to wait! GRRRRR! I was so dissapointed. But I just let go. I told myself – that I was meant to read the book and I would read it.

I don’t know how – but someone from Wiley Publishing saw a blog I had posted about the Attractor Factor. She sent me an email asking me to review your book. I was floored. To be honest – it has been the best feeling I’ve had in my life.

I’m not in your shoes – I don’t know or understand what it feels like when someone e-mails to critique or criticize me.

I know that your books have helped me. I know you hear that a lot. If I could write to Dr. Hew Len to say thanks I would. When I read that he gave you a new name – I cried. I know he’ll be giving me one – someday.

How do you tell 2 people who will forever be a part of your life – Thanks? I honestly can say that I will use the technique you gave to me in Zero Limits – the rest of my life. One day I’ll take the class and I’ll learn more – and maybe I’ll get to share what I’ve learned.

Please know that there are those of us out here that get it – and understand and are grateful.

So – in this moment right now I love you.

wow. pj’s comment that i lifted a conversation with dr. len from someone else’s writing is quite bold. and inaccurate. just ask dr. len. we were both in the hotel when it happened. i’m shocked someone would even think that of me, especially when it’s such a cruel statement. amazing.

Joe, those whom your ideas threaten will attack your motives and your very being. Let them continue in their own pathways, while you continue in yours. Practicing what you preach will produce more and more peace, over time. As Dr. Len says in your great work, it takes time. I love you, I’m sorry, Please forgive me, and thank you. I am grateful for your work.

    Hi Joe,

What ever you are selling, I’m buying. I for one am grateful for the links on where to find more stuff! I get about one email a day from you, some I read all the way through, some I just skim and realize it is not for me; all of them are welcome. I have taken Miracles Coaching from you; Bill Hibbler’s course on ebook mastermind; purchased several books; purchased 40 copies of The Secret to pass out – all because you or someone else let me know they were available.
Your “Zero Limits” book was the answer that I have been looking for all my life – I just want to help people, now I can.
Thank you so much and keep the info flowing,
    Kim
PS I got my Smart Car after clearing, see http://www.attractioncenter.com and click on the trip.

I can imagine that if Dr. Hew Len tells a story as many times as I’m sure he has, he tends to repeat himself. My attention was caught by the fact that what you wrote in the book duplicates EXACTLY (including punctuation and italics) what was written in the 1997 article. Here is a cut-and-paste from the article:

    (begin quote)

Cat: Would you tell a story about using Ho’oponopono for so-called inanimate objects?

Haleakala: I was in an auditorium once getting ready to do a lecture, and I was talking to the chairs. I asked, “Is there anybody I’ve missed? Does anyone have a problem that I need to take care of?” One of the chairs said, “You know, there was a guy sitting on me today during a previous seminar who had financial problems, and now I just feel dead!” So I cleaned (this word is in italics in both sources) with that problem, and I could just see the chair straightening up. Then I heard, “Okay! I’m ready to handle the next guy!”

What I actually try to do is teach the room. I say to the room and everything in it, “Do you want to learn how to do Ho’oponopono? After all, I’m going to leave soon. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could do this work for yourselves? Some say yes, some say no, and some say, “I’m too tired!”

    (end of quote)

Compare to pages 63 and 64 of your book.

If I misinterpreted, I apologize. I am simply struck by the fact that both quotes are exact. One would think there might be some variation between both tellings of the same story (and some variation in the writing), given that they were 10 years apart.

My best to you, Joe. I wish you well.

    Hi PJ,

I’m sure the quotes are exact since Dr. Len is the one who said them.

I’m pretty sure after 25 years of saying pretty much the same thing, he might say the same thing to me, too.

And since he’s the co-author of our book, I’m sure he had a chance to see them and approve them, or not, as he wished.

The real problem now is that people will see your review on amazon and think negative and not even get the book.

That was unfair to me, Dr. Len, the book, and all those potential readers.

    I’m cleaning on it.

    Blessings,

    joe

Hi Joe, I love the book and the 6 CD package. I have a fabulous inspiration for a product. I wrote you a long email last week, (2nd week in July) and have not heard back. So I am trying this way to connect with you. I really, really, really believe I am supposed to partner with you for this amazing product. I will resend the email. It will have my phone number in it.
    With joyful anticipation,
